What happens if I don't take that chance? - Career change interview with Outdoor Instructor Martin Swithenbank

- 2 min read
Despite feeling typecast in his previous life of formal education, Martin Swithenbank made a bold move into the world of outdoor education. Initially holding reservations about applying to do an apprenticeship in his forties, he found that once he stepped into this new world, it was like "going home."

In one of the most memorable moments of our conversation about Martin's career change from teacher to outdoor instructor, he shared a poignant piece of advice: "If you are not confident, then they are not going to be confident." This quote captures a turning point in his journey from doubt to self-assurance. It emerged during a challenging moment when Martin's boss pushed him to recognise not just his potential, but also the influence his confidence, or lack thereof, had on those he guided. This lesson became a cornerstone of his approach, instilling in him the importance of believing in oneself to inspire others.
Throughout the interview, Martin touched on a rich tapestry of topics, from the profound impact of nature on personal growth to the challenges and rewards of working with diverse groups of young people. He explored the transformative power of outdoor activities and how they provide an avenue for connection and development. His narrative also explored the limitations of traditional education systems, the importance of embracing personal growth, and the unexpected opportunities that arise from pursuing passions and taking bold steps into unfamiliar territories.
